(2/3) The Teeth of the Gale

(2/3) The Teeth of the Gale

Aiken, Joan

Aiken, Joan

From Publishers WeeklyIn this suspenseful sequel to Go Saddle the Sea and Bridle the Wind , both set in early 19th century Spain, a mature Felix returns, prepared for adventure. Three children have been kidnapped by their father, an escaped political prisoner who is hiding in the mountains. Will Felix be able to free them? Even knowing these are "wild and heartless times" because of King Ferdinand's terrible reign, he agrees to try. The trip will give him a chance to see his love, Juana. From the start, it seems that the little party is being followed. The horses are poisoned, and there are further ominous signs of a plot. Whom can they trust? Have they been sent into a trap? Intrigue is Aiken's stock-in-trade, and there is plenty to be found in this novel. While readers may sense a lack of underlying theme and wish for a greater development of Felix's affection for Juana, they could hardly ask for a more diverting, action-filled plot. As usual, Aiken writes with endless inventiveness and ease. Ages 12-up. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library JournalGrade 7 Up A stirring continuation of the adventures of the resourceful orphaned heir who, at 12, ran away from his Spanish grandfather's estate to seek his English father's people in Go Saddle the Sea (Doubleday, 1977; o.p.); and a year later made a shipwrecked return, in Bridle the Wind (Delacorte, 1983). It is a more mature Felix, now 18, who develops an understanding of his responsibilities as he meets physical dangers and political intrigues when his studies are interrupted and his help asked in regaining custody of children kidnapped by their mad fatheran escaped political prisoner. His elderly aunts fear that it is all a political trap to confiscate the estates, as grandfather is a known liberal, whose friends and views are out of favor with the restored monarch turned reactionary. But one member of the rescue party is Juana, the Basque girl whom Felix lovesrespectfully, since she has entered a conventand hopefully, since she has not taken final vows. Full of action, interesting characters, and made-real places, this forms a well-meshed conclusion to earlier episodes and an intriguing glimpse into Spain in the 1820s. (Author's historic notes and reading list are appended.) These books get better with each reading; share them with the adults. Ruth M. Project Skydancer was the brainchild of the Ministry of Defence. Beautiful and terrifying in its simplicity, DS29 had designed new warheads for Polaris missiles, warheads that with consummate ease could evade the new batteries of anti-ballistic missiles the Russians had set up around their prime military targets. For Aldermaston scientist Peter Joyce, it was the pinnacle of his career. Until his documents from the project turned up one chilly October morning on Parliament Hill, and the Ministry's prime suspect committed suicide leaving him with only two alternatives: write off a billion-pound project, or approve tests which could give Russia the power to wipe out the West at the touch of a button-.

The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul

Douglas Adams

Science Fiction / Mystery / Humor

When a passenger check-in desk at Terminal Two, Heathrow Airport, shot up through the roof engulfed in a ball of orange flame the usual people tried to claim responsibility. First the IRA, then the PLO and the Gas Board. Even the British Nuclear Fuels rushed out a statement to the effect that the situation was completely under control, that it was a one in a million chance, that there was hardly any radioactive leakage at all, and that the site of the explosion would make a nice location for a day out with the kids and a picnic, before finally having to admit that it wasn't actually anything to do with them at all. No rational cause could be found for the explosion — it was simply designated an act of God. But, thinks Dirk Gently, which God? And why? Those of my blood

Those of my blood

Jacqueline Lichtenberg

Jacqueline Lichtenberg

Jacqueline Lichtenberg, author of the cult classic Sime-Gen series (“science fiction in the grand manner”-The New York Times Book Review), has become known for her complex worldbuilding and fiery characters. Those of My Blood is her most ambitious work to date, a big, bold novel of alien contact, obsessive love, and lunar adventure. They have been living among us in secret: the luren, a race of extraterrestrial vampires. Some luren, such as the brilliant scientist Titus Shiddehara, call themselves “Residents” and consider Earth their home; others, known as “Tourists,” regard humans solely as food. A simmering conflict between the two groups has left the luren divided for generations. When an alien starship crashes on the moon, Titus and his allies must stop the Tourists from using their technology to contact the luren homeworld-a move that would lead to the subjugation of all humanity. But when Titus’s enemy on the moon is revealed as his “father”-the man who awakened him to the existence of a vampire-he knows he faces a battle he cannot win without taking humans as pawns. and breaking an oath he swore long ago. The wild card in the deck is a survivor of the crash, whose very existence is a guarded secret. Neither Tourist nor Resident-but very definitely luren-the alien may hold the secret of salvation for both humanity and luren. if the ties of blood can be reconciled with the ties of honor. Rich in the power of the vampire legend, Those of My Blood is a sf adventure of epic scope. Jacqueline Lichtenberg’s recent books include Mahogany Trinrose and the Dushau trilogy (Dushau, Farfetch, Outreach). She lives in Spring Valley, New York, and is currently at work on Dreamspy, a companion volume to Those of My Blood.
