Murder Goes Round and Round: A Pierre Chambrun Mystery Hardcover

Murder Goes Round and Round: A Pierre Chambrun Mystery Hardcover

Hugh Pentecost

Hugh Pentecost

From Publishers WeeklyMurder and mayhem come once again to New York's Hotel Beaumont in the 21st mystery featuring hotel manager Pierre Chambrun. Popular jazz musician Toby March disappears after performing at the Beaumont's Blue Lagoon, with his room in the hotel left wrecked and bloody. Finding March is made more complicated because no one knows what he looks like; he has never been seen without a mask since he was disfigured in an accident several years before. His manager, Frank Pasqua, is also missing; the body of a well-dressed stranger is found in the basement of the hotel; and Chambrun himself is shot and gravely wounded. The body turns out to be that of a London policeman who is investigating rumors tying March, an Englishman, to the kidnapping of 11 English teenagers by terrorists seeking the release of Iranian prisoners; the corpse of one girl, raped and beaten, has already been returned to her parents. Still recovering from his wounds, Chambrun must find March and the children and defuse a threat to blow up the Beaumont before the situation can be resolved. MWA Grandmaster Pentecosts indulges in some rather formulaic writing here; while some boilerplate is necessary in most series to set the scene for new readers, in this case it has become tiresome. One Human Minute

One Human Minute

Stanisław Lem

Stanisław Lem

In three scathingly humorous reviews of not-yet-written books, Stanislaw Lem brings us insights into the life of the 21st century. “One Human Minute” summarizes the activities of every person on earth during a single minute. “The Upside-Down Evolution” depicts a battlefield devoid of human activity, where synthetic bugs—synsects—vie for supremacy. “The World as Cataclysm” unfolds the universe as a crooked roulette wheel, where cosmic catastrophe prevails over orderly evolution. All reflect the speculative imagination and dark humor that have made Lem a grand master of the science fiction genre. FB2Library.Elements.CiteItem

The way journalist Gus Bailey tells it, old money is always preferred, but occasionally new money sneaks in--even where it is most unwelcome. After moving from Cincinnati, Elias and Ruby Renthal strike it even richer in New York, turning their millions into billions. It would be impolite for high society to refuse them now. Not to mention disadvantageous. As long as the market is strong, there's absolutely nothing to worry about--except for those nasty secrets from the past. Scandal, anyone...?From the Paperback edition. From Library JournalBest-selling author ( The Two Mrs. Grenvilles , 1985) and Vanity Fair contributor Dunne presents a contemporary comedy of manners (really a satirical "tragedy of morals") that examines the values of Manhattan's old families and "nouveau riche" alike. Juxtaposed against the problems of opulent "Social Register" types at the "best" parties are basic issues with far-reaching consequences, often escaping the understanding of these inbred members of high society. When disasters touch those at the top, their lives must be reshaped, enabling some to restructure their existences more realistically. Discerning readers will find much to ponder within sublevels of this entertaining story. Highly recommended. Ellen R. Cohen, Rockville, Md.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. Crazy Heart

Crazy Heart

Thomas Cobb

Thomas Cobb

At the age of fifty-seven, Bad Blake is on his last legs. His weight, his ticker, his liver, even his pick-up truck are all giving him trouble. A renowned songwriter and "picker" who hasn't recorded in five years, Bad now travels the countryside on gigs that take him mostly to motels and bowling alleys. Enter Ms. Right. Can Bad stop living the life of a country-western song and tie a rope around his crazy heart? From Library JournalSinger and guitarist Bad Blake was once a first-rate country-and-western star, but now he's 57, an alcoholic, a failure at four marriages, and playing in third-rate clubs. The biggest gig he can get is opening for Tommy Sweet, the kid Bad got started and whose career has now eclipsed Bad's. Bad meets Jean Craddock when she comes to interview him and they fall in love. Her little boy, Buddy, inspires Bad to search for his own long-lost son, but there's no happy ending there. And when Bad, hungry for a drink, loses Jean's son, things take a downturn, despite Bad's fling with AA. This first novel has the authentic patter and ambience of those seedy one-night-stands, but the plot is thin and the ending is very downbeat. There will be heavy promotion and advertising, so requests may warrant purchase. Rosellen Brewer, Monterey Cty. Lib., Seaside, Cal.Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. Review“You can almost hear the whining twang of a pedal steel guitar and the droning of a mournful singer while reading Crazy Heart.” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram ) “Crazy Heart is a beautiful book….The characters are cut cleanly out of America….Bad Blake is a man you will not soon forget.” (Washington Times ) “In producing as nearly a masterpiece as the subject has yet attracted, Cobb seems to have triumphed….Cobb has created an unforgettable character who engages not only your interest but your emotion…and who proceeds to take you on a roller-coaster ride through his tawdrily tumultuous life.” (Chicago Tribune ) “[Cobb’s] picture of the scraggly underside of Western music is brutally convincing.” (The New Yorker ) “Thomas Cobb’s marvelous first novel doesn’t just play on your heartstrings, it breaks them.” (San Francisco Examiner ) “This is a heartfelt book: the descriptions of writing songs and playing them, of finding love and ruining it, of sweet, painful memories. There’s nothing startling in the plot or the characters, but they are alive.” (Houston Chronicle ) “Crazy Heart just might be the finest country-western novel ever written, bar none.” (Houston Post ) “Blake’s dedication to, and integrity towards, his country music is more than matched by Cobb’s moving, respectful evocation of the world of country music, and the life and times of Bad Blake.” (Boston Herald ) “Thomas Cobb has produced a piercing, keenly observed chronicle of modern Americana, getting across the current mores and attitudes as experience by C&W musician Blake.” (Los Angeles Times ) “Thomas Cobb has written a bitter, witty psychological profile of an aging genius that is also a wonderful celebration of country music. Bad Blake lives at the poor end of the rainbow, but you’ll never forget him. Crazy Heart is a splendid achievement.” (Donald Barthelme ) “A measure of Thomas Cobb’s talent is that he can make Bad Blake’s story amusing even as we watch him fall. Bad is entirely sympathetic, and this crazy heart is vivid; the milieu is as resonant as a steel guitar, and the plot moves along without skipping a beat.” (New York Times Book Review )

Oscar and Lucinda bw-1988

Oscar and Lucinda bw-1988

Peter Carey

Fiction

The Booker Prize-winning novel-now a major motion picture from Fox Searchlight Pictures. This sweeping, irrepressibly inventive novel, is a romance, but a romance of the sort that could only take place in nineteenth-century Australia. For only on that sprawling continent-a haven for misfits of both the animal and human kingdoms-could a nervous Anglican minister who gambles on the instructions of the Divine become allied with a teenaged heiress who buys a glassworks to help liberate her sex. And only the prodigious imagination of Peter Carey could implicate Oscar and Lucinda in a narrative of love and commerce, religion and colonialism, that culminates in a half-mad expedition to transport a glass church across the Outback.
