Chapter 1: Dr. Mansfield
Dr. Mansfield
"These are beautiful flowers," I said as I gazed around. The surrounding was familiar, and it was wonderful. Children were running around and playing. Adults were standing in twos and threes, chatting away with smiles on their faces. Everything was perfect but then it became cloudy. People screamed as they ran helter-skelter for cover. Then there was a little girl, even with blood on every part of her body, she was smiling at me with hope in her eyes.
"I won't let you down," I said in a hoarse whisper as I tried to stop the flow of blood.
Alas, I couldn't stop it and the light died in her eyes, my hope gone.
"No! No!" I cried out before I sprang awake and realized it had been a bad dream. I still had dreams about my experiences as a military doctor, glimpses of the experiences I had had in the field and why I had decided to move to Claywell. My bedroom was still dark and I reached out to turn on the light beside my bed.
"1:30 am. I've barely slept an hour, and I'm plagued by these dreams," I muttered grouchily as I stood up and headed towards the kitchen. I was thirsty and needed something to drink. I was fully awake by the time I got to the kitchen; I switched on the light before pouring myself a glass of water. I drank the full glass within seconds before grabbing my first aid kit and popping Aspirins in my mouth. I was already beginning to feel the headache that usually accompanied those dreams. Will this continue for the rest of my life? I wondered as I washed my glass.
I went back to the bedroom, hoping to catch some sleep before daybreak. However, my wishes weren't granted because hours later I had slept for less than thirty minutes when I heard the first knock.
"Damn it," I groaned as I heard the knock on my door again. At first, I thought I was hallucinating, but the knock was persistent. It was coming from the door of my apartment, which I had lived in since moving to Claywell. I stood up from my bed only in my pyjama shorts and headed towards my living room. Who could be knocking as early as this? I thought as I checked the time and realized it was only 5:30 am. I switched on the light in my living room as I walked to the door.
"Dr. Mansfield!” I heard a woman call from the other side of the door as I drew closer.
Must be some emergency, I thought as I opened the door, just as the woman was about to knock on my door again.
"Thank goodness, Doctor. I'm sorry for disturbing you this early," The woman, who I now recognize as my seventy-year-old neighbor Mrs. Caris, said apologetically. It wasn't unusual for my neighbors to come to me when they needed medical help. I usually referred them to the hospital if it wasn’t urgent. Claywell was a closely knitted community after all, and once you moved here you became part of the family.
"It's no problem ma'am," I said with a little smile.
"I've told you not to call me that. It makes me feel old when you call me that, you can just call me Melbury," Mrs. Caris said. I could clearly see that the older woman was trying to make jokes despite the strained look on her face.
"Okay, Melbury."
"Come in," I said with a smile as I gestured to her to enter my apartment.
"Thank you," Melbury said as she limped inside.
"You're welcome."
"Please, take a seat," I said as I pointed to the brown couch in my living room.
"Thank you," Melbury said again as she sat carefully on the couch. She must have a problem with her leg. I thought as I watched Melbury wince as she sat.
"So, what’s the problem?" I asked with a concerned voice as I sat opposite Melbury.
"I don't know, Doctor. I think I sprained my leg yesterday morning when I fell while gardening," Melbury said.
"Can I have a look at the leg?" I asked gently. Melbury stretched out her right leg, which I could already see was swollen.
"I thought it was fine yesterday but then I tried to sleep and the pain became unbearable. I just couldn't take the pain anymore. I came here because you’re closer to me than the hospital," Melbury said as she nervously twisted her fingers in her lap.
"Have you taken any medication?" I asked as I stood from the chair and crouched low beside Melbury's leg so I could see it better.
"Yes, I took some aspirin. It stopped the pain all through the day," Melbury said with a shrug.
"I'll be right back," I stood up and left Melbury in the living room to get my first aid kit. I returned a few minutes later with the box and placed it on the floor. I pulled on a pair of gloves, crouched low beside Melbury again and lifted her leg gently. Melbury gasped in pain as I felt the swollen ankle with my fingers.
"Melbury, this looks like more than a sprain, although I can't tell for sure. It looks more like a dislocation," I said as I gently placed her foot back on the floor.
"I'll have to visit the hospital then," Melbury said resignedly as I resumed my seat opposite her.
"Yes, I'll call an ambulance to come pick you up. You will have to have an X-ray," I said with a reassuring smile.
"Thank you, Doctor," Melbury said with a small smile.
"You're welcome," I said as I picked up my phone and dialed the hospital's emergency line. "Good morning, I have an emergency at my house and need an ambulance," I said when they picked up.
"Address, please," the official said on the other end.
"14 Crescent Wilson Street," I replied.
"Okay, we'll be right there," The official said.
"Thank you," I said before I ended the call.
"Can I get you anything, Melbury?" I asked.
"I'm fine, Doctor, I just need something for this pain, that's all," Melbury said bravely.
"And you will get it soon," I said reassuringly.
"Thank you. How have you been enjoying your stay here so far, Doctor?" Melbury asked.
How had I been enjoying my stay at Claywell? I had to admit, at first, it was great. I deserved a break after all the deaths I had witnessed while I served as a doctor in the military. Claywell was the breath of fresh air that I needed. However, I had grown to dislike everything around here. I didn’t know what had gone wrong or how it had happened. Suddenly, I just wanted out of here. I didn’t enjoy it here, even though I loved what I was doing. The excitement I had felt when I first moved here seemed to have deserted me. I needed to start making serious plans to leave as soon as possible. I mean, there was no point staying when I wasn’t happy anymore. I needed to start looking for alternatives. Of course, I couldn’t tell Melbury that. Everyone here, including her, saw Claywell as the best place anyone could live. At a point, I had felt the same.
"Doctor?" Melbury asked with a concerned look when I didn’t answer.
"I'm enjoying my stay here very much, Mel
"That's good," Melbury said with a smile just as I heard a siren in a distance.
"That must be them," I said as I stood up and looked through the window. It was indeed an ambulance, and they were already right outside my house.
"They’re here, Melbury," I said as I turned from the window and unlocked the door.
"Okay," Melbury said and she tried to stand up.
"No, don't put any further stress on that leg," I said hurriedly. “You stay there, and they will come help you out.” I watched her relax back into the chair as I heard them pull up in front of my house.
I opened the door before they knocked.
"Good morning Dr. Mansfield," Peter, one of the EMT officials, said. I had come across him a few times at the hospital.
"Good morning, Peter," I said as I led him and the other EMT official in. I didn't know her name.
"I think Mrs. Caris has a dislocation and needs an X-ray," I said as we entered the living room.
"Hello Melbury," Peter said cheerfully. Of course, he knew her. Everyone knows each other in Claywell, I thought as I watched Melbury break into a big smile.
"Champ, you seem to have grown twice the size since the last time I saw you," Melbury said.
"And you've grown more beautiful," Peter said with a smile. Is she really blushing? I thought as I watched Melbury turn red at Peter's compliment.
Soon they had taken Melbury away and were on their way to the hospital. I sighed as I closed the front door. I knew my night was over along with any chance of more sleep. I decided to have my shower and head to work.
"There is an emergency, Doctor," Nurse Chantel said as she bursts into my office at Claywell Hospital. I had just finished my rounds fifteen minutes ago, and I was planning to check on Melbury to find out if my hunch had been right.
"I'll be right there," I said as I stood up and grabbed my stethoscope. I had known from the beginning that I wasn't going to stay in Claywell for a long time because I hadn't got on well with the other doctors, except for a few like Dr. Carter and his wife Sharon. There was also Dr. Edgar and Dr. Brown who were both new in town just like me. I knew I would miss those four when I left town. They had tried to make my stay enjoyable, but I guess I wanted more. I thought as I closely followed the nurse to the emergency room.
What do we have this time? Perhaps it's a car accident though those rarely occur around here. For the past four months I've been here, there have hardly been emergencies worse than accidents. I thought as I got to the entrance of the operating room. I sterilized my hands and put on a nose mask and gloves. I wasn't surprised when I saw two other doctors cleaning blood off a man laid on the surgical table. This looks like a car accident patient. I hope no one else was involved, I thought to myself as my colleagues and I prepared to perform emergency surgery on him.
"Car accident," One of the nurses said as I moved closer to the table, confirming my suspicion. I joined the rest of the team, and we started operating on the man.
I left the room some hours later, after a successful operation, and I was on my way to my office when I saw Dr. Edgar coming towards my direction.
"Good morning, George," Dr. Edgar said with a smile as he reached my side.
"Morning, Edgar," I said with a smile.
"I heard you were in surgery, how did it go?"
"It went well, better than I expected,"
"Great. I’m having a mini get together tomorrow at my place, it would be great if you can come,"
"Mini get together?"
"Yeah, just a couple of us hanging out and having a break from work. I made sure it wouldn't clash with any of our shifts," Dr. Edgar said. I knew he was referring to Dr. Brown and the rest. I better enjoy the rest of my time with them. That way, I would have fond memories of them and Claywell.
"That sounds cool, I'll be there,"
"Good, my place at 5,"
"Okay, I’ll see you then,"
"I’ll see you later, I have to do my rounds now,"
"Okay," I said as I watched him hurry away.
Now, I have to find Melbury; she must be around somewhere. I thought as I walked towards the reception area to find out if Melbury was still here or if she had been discharged.
"Hello," I said as I reached the receptionist's desk, which was being managed by two nurses.
They both looked up and gave me a smile.
"Hi, doctor," They chorused.
"Can you please check if Melbury Charis is still here at the hospital?" I said.
"I'll do that," one of the nurses said and started to type on her keyboard.
"Thank you," I said and drummed my fingers on the counter while I waited.
"Yes, she is," the nurse said as she raised her head away from the screen. "She’s in block A, ward 304," the nurse said.
"Thank you," I said before I left the reception and headed for Melbury's ward.
I found her ward with ease and, with a nod to the nurse in charge, entered. I smiled when I noticed she was just waking up. She had a bandage on her leg.
"Hello, Melbury," I said as I stood beside her bed.
"Hello Doctor," Melbury said in a groggy voice.
"How are you feeling now?” I asked as I opened her file. I thought as much, I thought as I read that the X-ray had identified a dislocation. I closed the file and put it back in its rightful place
"I feel much better now," Melbury said with a smile.
"As you should. You'll be ready to go home soon," I reassured her.
"I hope so, I don't like the smell in hospitals," Melbury said as she wrinkled her nose.
"It will be over soon," I said with a smile.
"Thank you, Doctor," Melbury said.
"You're very welcome," I replied with a smile. "I'll be on my way now, Melbury."
"Okay," She said, relaxing against her pillows.
"I'll come and check you again before my shift ends," I promised.
"Okay," She gave a little smile before I saw her close her eyes once more. She must have been given some strong anesthetics. I thought as I walked out of her room and closed the ward door gently behind me. The rest of the day passed by uneventful until my shift ended, and then it was time to go home. I made a small detour to check on Melbury before I finally left.
Chapter 2: Nurse Nikki
Nurse Nikki
“Nikki!” My mom, Bethany, screamed my name from the living room. I was in my bedroom preparing for my first day as a nurse at Claywell Hospital. I was already dressed in my blue scrubs and was just packing my bag.
“I’m coming, mom!” I called, hoping she would be able to hear me.
“Your breakfast is ready!” She yelled again. I rolled my eyes because I had told my mom that I was running late and wouldn’t have time for breakfast. It wouldn’t do me any good to be late for work on my first day, I thought as I dropped my phone in my bag and zipped it up. I picked it up and left my room, heading towards the living room.
I’m so excited for my first day. This has been my dream for so long. I will finally be living my dream of becoming a nurse. Before my dad died, I remember telling him how much I wanted this. This means so much to me. Besides, the fact that I love this job, fulfilling this feels like fulfilling a promise I made to my dad. I entered the kitchen and found toast and eggs on a plate on the dining table.
“Mom, you didn’t have to go through this,” I said carefully. I knew how much my mom loved looking after me. Not that I wasn’t grateful for it. She had helped me to finish nursing school, but I didn’t like it when she stressed herself out trying to do too much.
